tips for windy weather shoots

When you book your photos in, the type of weather you get isn’t really in our control. Sometimes conditions are PERFECT, and other times it can be a little trickier.

In some instances, the forecast won’t be manageable and we’ll have to reschedule (for example, severe weather warnings, heavy rain and gale force winds).

But if it’s just a little bit windy, we kinda just have to work with what we’ve got (I know, not always ideal).

So here’s a few tips if you do happen to have your photos scheduled on a breezy night 👇🏻

🌬 Put long hair up or pin it back away from faces. I know you probably love the idea of something that’s a little bit fancier than your every day hairstyles, but a gust of wind at the wrong time could be the difference between a beautiful photo and one that doesn’t make it to the gallery.
Tip - half up, half down can be a good compromise!

🌬 Choose clothing that won’t SHOW the wind as much. Jeans and a nice top can work way better than a dress on windy nights.

🌬 Layer up! If it’s during the cooler months, the wind can add a chill factor. And chilly kids can be a little tricky… so layer up (if you’re allowed to)! Layers UNDERNEATH the main clothing can work if you don’t want to cover up a special outfit you’ve bought for the occasion.

🌬 Location changes. If you’ve booked a Last Light Session or a Little Memories Session, I have some locations for these shoots that are more sheltered than others, so we can shift locations to minimise the wind factor as much as possible.

🌬 Embrace it! We can’t control the weather, but we can still enjoy ourselves and make the best of what we’re given. After all, we’re creating a memory as well as taking photos 🥰
